Hello All. You know, I should probably get back to finishing up the rest of my 06 journals, I left off in August, cause the rest of the year was… whatever it was, but I’m not feeling very chronological today, so how about this: Hello. You know, I should probably get back to finishing up the rest of my 06 journals, I left off in August, cause the rest of the year was… whatever it was, but I’m not feeling very chronological today, so how about this:
Let me tell you about my random trip to DC to check The Evens Show, Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina in their hometown! Word.
After the Dubai gig that I jacked up my knee at, I went to Woodward to join in on a Vert summit that Chad Kagy organized. I hung out with the Kagy and Kevin (Robinson) the first day and all I could think about was riding with them and realized since I’m injured and can’t ride I’m going to be putting myself through torture watching the all the inspiring riders get together to throw down without being able to join in.
That’s just not my style, in fact it would drive me crazy, so I had to do myself a favor and get out. I looked at flights and they were all sold out unless I went through DC. I had been watching The Evens’ tour schedule all year because I’ve been hoping to catch one of their shows if our paths crossed on the road. They happened to be playing a show at the infamous Rec. Center of St. Stephan’s Church. St. Stephan’s Church is also home of Positive Force who has been host of many epic shows. Positive Force is an activist group that spread a message to live by. Visit their site and help empower the youth. Check out this page of past shows that laid down some DC punk history at St. Stephan’s.
The show was the real deal. It brought me back to before punk rock became cool. Ian had me sit on stage, on the side, and gave me the ‘soccer teams’ drummer stool to sit on and watch the show - so I didn’t have to stand up on my jacked up leg. Thanks Ian. The week before I had to get 100cc's of blood drained out of it. The show was so powerful I had to do all I could to not get sacrificial on my knee and stay seated.
After the Evens show myself, Ian and one of his OG DC friends went back to the Dischord house to bring their equipment back and he gave me a tour of the Dischord house. This was my first visit to the Dischord house. Pretty surreal.... That basement area is where they recorded all the Fugazi records, Faith, Minor Threat… so much musical history went down in that tiny basement. It is a testament that anything can happen with some heart and soul. You can’t even stand up the ceiling is so low. You have to put your head between the beams. We went up stairs and Ian pulled out a banner to show me. It was from the last Minor Threat show they ever played. That room has all the masters of every discord album made. That house is so sketchy and falling apart - total ghetto with a pot of gold in every room. I don’t think it’s been cleaned since he bought it in ‘81. Punk Rock!
Here’s Ian’s office he has worked from since the beginning. He was showing me old pictures with him and Tony Alva and other bits of serious punk rock history!
On the way out Ian and I stopped and took a picture on the steps from the picture of the original Minor Threat demo album!!!
Ian drove me back to my car and I pinched myself to see if this was indeed real and drove to my hotel to get some sleep and catch my flight the next morning.
